Springs Pests and How to Avoid Them

Spring is upon us and so are creepy critters! If you would like to stay away from the creepy crawlies as much as possible, you’re in the right place. Our pest control experts in Hoboken have compiled a list of the most common spring pests, and how you can avoid them in order to make your spring time bliss as bliss-filled as possible.

Ticks

Did you know that ticks are a serious concern for any outdoor enthusiast? Most ticks carry lyme disease and can cause debilitating symptoms to victims who are not treated quickly. Lyme disease can include a variety of awful symptoms, including joint pain, migraines, chronic rash and partial paralysis. And, although they’re common across the United States, they’re extremely prevalent in our neck of the woods.

How to Avoid Them

The best way to avoid a tick attaching to you is by wearing pants and long sleeves while out in the woods. A great deterrent is DEET, but if you would like to stay away from heavy chemicals, you can also try BiteBlocker as a safe alternative. There are also organic pest control options, such as orange oil or essential oils. Be sure to treat your pets if they too are joining you on your adventure out into the woods.

Flies

At a minimum, flies are not only a nuisance but if you’re dealing with horseflies, you’ll be dealing with their painful welts left behind after they bite you. Once the weather begins to warm up, the flies start to hatch, leaving you swarmed and falling victim to annoyance and painful welts.

How to Avoid Them

At night, flies are inactive – this is our chance to exterminate them once and for all! However, if you are wanting to go out for a hike, we suggest you take off early. The earlier you start your hike, the better you’ll be able to avoid them. Unfortunately, flies are attracted to the carbon dioxide that we expel while breathing. So, the best time to avoid them is when they’re dormant during the wee hours of the morning.
