Every year around this time, the calls start coming in from our neighbors in Haworth. The leaves are turning, the nights are getting cooler, and somebody hears a faint scratching in the wall after the kids go to bed. Or they open the pantry and find a chewed corner on a box of crackers. It's the same story almost every October: mice are moving indoors for the season.
As a family-owned pest control company with an office right here on Terrace Street, we see this pattern up close. Here's why it happens, what to watch for, and what you can do now to keep your home mouse-free through the winter.
Why fall is rodent season in the Northern Valley
Mice don't hibernate. When temperatures drop, they go looking for three things: warmth, food, and a safe place to nest. Your home offers all three.
Haworth has a lot going for it, and some of what makes it a great place to live also makes it attractive to rodents. The tree-lined streets, mature yards, wooded edges, and open land near the Oradell Reservoir give mice and other rodents plenty of cover through the warmer months. Once the weather turns, the houses nearby become the most comfortable option around.
Fall yard work can also stir things up. Raking, clearing garden beds, and stacking firewood can disturb places where mice have been living outside, and they'll look for somewhere new to go. Often that's a garage, a crawl space, or a gap along the foundation.
Early signs you have mice
Mice are good at staying out of sight, so most people find the evidence before they ever see the animal. Keep an eye out for:
- Droppings. Small, dark, and roughly the size of a grain of rice. Check along walls, under the kitchen sink, in the back of cabinets, and behind appliances.
- Gnaw marks. Chewed food packaging, cardboard boxes in storage, or nibbled wiring and insulation.
- Sounds at night. Light scratching or scurrying in walls, ceilings, or the attic, usually after the house gets quiet.
- Nesting material. Shredded paper, fabric, or insulation tucked into a hidden corner.
- Odd pet behavior. Dogs and cats often notice a mouse long before you do. If your pet keeps staring at one spot by the stove or the baseboard, pay attention.
- Grease marks. Dark smudges along the bottom of walls or around small openings where mice travel the same route again and again.
If you notice even one of these, it's worth acting quickly. A small problem is much easier to handle than one that's had a few weeks to settle in.
How mice get inside
People are often surprised by how small a gap a mouse can squeeze through. If a pencil fits through an opening, a mouse can probably make it work. Common entry points we find in Haworth homes include:
- Gaps where utility lines, cable, and pipes enter the house
- Worn or missing weatherstripping under garage doors and exterior doors
- Cracks in the foundation or around basement windows
- Openings around dryer vents and exhaust fans
- Spaces where siding meets the foundation
- Gaps around the chimney or roofline, especially in older homes
Older homes, which you'll find plenty of throughout town, tend to have more of these openings simply because materials settle and shift over the years. Newer homes aren't immune either. It only takes one gap.
What you can do this weekend
There's a lot you can do yourself to make your home less inviting:
- Store food in sealed containers. That includes pet food and birdseed, which are easy targets in garages and mudrooms.
- Take a walk around the outside of your house. Look low along the foundation and around anything that passes through the wall. Make a note of any gaps you find.
- Fix the garage door seal. A worn bottom seal is one of the easiest ways in, and one of the easiest things to replace.
- Move firewood away from the house. Stack it off the ground and a good distance from your walls.
- Trim back shrubs and ground cover touching the siding so rodents don't have a protected path right up to the house.
- Clean up clutter in the basement, attic, and garage. Boxes and piles give mice quiet places to nest.
- Keep gutters clear and fix any moisture issues, since standing water and damp spots attract pests of all kinds.
These steps go a long way, but they won't always solve a problem that has already started, and it's easy to miss entry points you can't see from the ground.
How Tapout handles rodent control
When you call us, we start with a thorough inspection inside and out. We look for signs of activity, figure out where the mice are coming from, and find the entry points that let them in. Then we put together a plan for your home.
Our rodent control service doesn't stop at removing the mice that are already inside. We also seal the entry points we find, because if the openings stay open, new mice will keep finding their way in every fall. Closing those gaps is what gives you lasting results instead of a problem that comes back next year.
We'll also walk you through what we found and share practical tips to help keep your home protected going forward.
Staying protected all year
Rodents are a big fall concern, but they're not the only pests that show up in Bergen County homes. Ants and stinging insects in the spring and summer, spiders and stink bugs in the fall, and termites looking for wood near the foundation can all become problems at different times of year.
That's why many of our customers choose a quarterly home protection plan. We visit four times a year to treat for all general pests, adjusting our approach as the seasons change. And if pests show up between scheduled visits, we come back and re-service your home at no extra charge. It's an easy way to stay ahead of problems instead of reacting to them.
